Karhunen-Loeve Approach

One of the first steps of the computer-based process chosen here was to compress information in two new channels.

First, we compute the Karhunen-Loeve transform which consists in choosing a new system of coordinates. The first axis for example is the one on which the projection of the pixels composing the initial four bands image is maximum and so on.

Finally, the two bands which concentrate the maximal quantity of initial contrast are chosen.

The resulting images are as follows and the bands chosen are the ones of figures 6 and 7.

Note that in order to visualize pixel information we have extended the pixel values of each of the new bands to the grey values 0 to 255. Otherwise, the two last images with poorly contrasting grey levels would appear as almost homogeneous grey images.
