CONTROL-FIRE-SAT PROJECT
(Design of a framework for producing and providing Earth Observation based information services for forest fires management at European and local levels)
Forest fires have a large economic and climatic impact and have largely increased in the past few years in the Mediterranean countries. Civil Protection Agencies are spending large amounts of money to identify risk areas, to control burning areas and to cover economic damages of burned areas. Currently, remote sensing is hardly used for forest fire risk and fire damage assessment, yet it can potentially be a valuable input to the information collection process.
The aim of CFS Project is to demonstrate the extent to which Earth Observation data can be used to support the management of fire risk, to provide warnings of fire events and to support decision making during fire-fighting activities through the development of a pre-operational warning and information system.
As a whole, CFS aims to support and widen the objectives of the CEO, by
introducing and testing the efficiency of EO derived products in an area that could spread
its use enormously and require a large supply of EO data in the near future, in the domain
of forest fire prevention and control.
