Data Used & Project Outline
The general objective of CFS is the provision, in real-time, of Earth Observation based information services (at a pre-operational level) to Public Authorities responsible for forest fire management strategies.
These activities relate to three aspects:
Fire risk estimation,
Night fire detection, and
Fighting of large fires.
CFS delivers, as services, four customised products, derived from NOAA-AVHRR data. The use of AVHRR data is proposed to produce daily updated fire risk information based on Vegetation Indices (VI) and Surface Temperature (ST). A fire detection and warning system will be developed, operating during night hours to improve information collection during crucial periods, when other sources are not reliable. It is intended that fire front evolution may be monitored to produce a progress report during the fire event and that information can be efficiently transmitted at all times via a Service Delivery System.
Activities cover the summer seasons of 1998 and 1999 for Greece, Spain
and France.
