Methodology

The CFS methodology is based on the processing and interpretation of satellite images received from the sensor AVHRR on board NOAA satellite. In addition, an exhaustive user requirements analysis describes in detail the real needs of the Authorities in charge of prevention, management and surpression of forest fires. These needs are satisfied with the CFS products.

CFS is structured into the following six major Workpackages:

  1. Project management and co-ordination

  2. User requirements consolidation

  3. Adjustment of products and definition

  4. Production and delivery

  5. Evaluation actions

  6. Dissemination actions

There are five parameters, against which CFS success is measured. These are:

  1. Acceptance in the daily work tasks of the End Users of each of the four EO products generated by CFS.

  2. Organisation of forest vigilance routines using as a base the risk criteria coming from Product 1.

  3. Number of fires detected at night, prior to being detected by present End User detection means.

  4. Real use of large fire front evolution maps in extinction activities.

  5. Number of registered (professional) accesses to the Web dissemination site.
