Vegetation

Nine types of vegetation are taken into account for this area of Palni. Here is a short description:

  Class
                                                           Type of végétation

      1

 Low forest sempervirente *.

 * sempervirente: forest whose foliage is not renewed according to a seasonal rhythm and which appears always green.

      2
 Wet dense forest semi-deciduous *.

 * deciduous: related to plants with leaves falling according to a seasonal rhythm.

      3
 Vallicole forest semi-deciduous.

      4

 Semi-deciduous forest or dry deciduous.

      5
 Savanna *.

 * savanna: in the tropical area, herbaceous formation which has the aspect, the nature of grass,  often closed with trees.

      6
Mosaic of shrubby savanna and deforestations.

      7
 Irrigated cultures.

      8
 Dry cultures.

      9
 Discontinuous thickets and pseudo-steppe *.

steppe: discontinuous formation of xerophilous plants (plant adapted to dry climates), often herbaceous outcrops *.

to outcrop: to put two contiguous objects at the same level .

Let us notice that several classes are very close to each other. It is the case of classes 5 and 6 for two types of savannas, and of classes 1, 2, 3 and 4 for various types of forests. The study of the histograms of grey levels of samples shows indeed that it is difficult to distinguish classes only from their grey levels (see paragraph "Calculation of possibility distributions from grey levels histograms").
