Comparison of the two indicators

The images that follow were created by computer simulations so that they imitate real scenes. Each element in these scenes corresponds to 1 m2 . Each scene is illuminated by the sun from the East-West direction. The sun is 45o above the horizon. The height of each tree is variable, with mean height 3m. (For more details on how these scenes were created see M.Faraklioti, 2000, NDVI and Mixed pixel Classification, PhD Thesis, Surrey University).

As the size of each tree has been randomly chosen, it is impossible to construct scenes with exactly prespecified vegetation cover. The vegetation cover of each scene was determined afterwards, by computing the vegetation pixels (both shadowed and illuminated). Table 1 below gives the actual vegetation cover for each scene.
